Geared towards uplifting the living condition of and empowering the farmers in the area, Double Up Project implemented under the auspices of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries in close coordination with DA-Maguindanao responds to the needs of the coffee, rubber and cacao growers in Upi, Maguindanao.
Thus, on October 26, the Project was turned-over to the Upian Agri Farmers Producer Cooperative and showcased their hard work and dedication. The Project, which is in support to cacao industry in the region, consists of a complete package of nursery production support that is worth P1.3M in total. In his opening message, Regional Secretary Alexander G. Alonto, Jr. urged the farmers to continue working for and supporting all the programs of the department as they also committed to provide quality support to the farmer beneficiaries in order to uplift and improve their social living condition.
Meanwhile, in an interview by RAFID Chief Dr. Kadiguia R. Abdullah to Coop Chair Jonathan Acupio, he shared his full acceptance of the responsibility along with the assistance they receive and shared his happiness for the huge help that this intervention could bring to them. He related that their journey towards success is not an easy one as they went through hard time working for progress just to keep their coop going. Now, they announce that after 4-long years of struggle and toil, their produce is already known both locally and nationally. In fact, they supply seeds not just in Mindanao, but also in Luzon and Visayas.
HVCDP Coordinator Dr. Jalika D. Mangacop noted that the total package is composed of construction of the nursery with a storage house, water system, and other corresponding tools and equipment required for the operation of the nursery. Dr. Mangacop added that before the year ends, similar projects will also be turned-over in the provinces of Sulu, Basilan and Lanao del Sur with similar allocation under the 2016 funds of HVCDP.
The event has featured the ribbon cutting ceremony and unveiling of the storage house marker that is constructed as part of the package given to the recipient coop. This building will respond to the need of the cooperative on where to properly put and secure their valuable seedlings.
In a message, former PAO and 4MP Maguindanao President Dr. Salik Panalunsong who represented USec. Ranibai Dilangalen, urged the farmers to keep preserving their resources as he went on saying that Upi has a potential due to its fertile soil that is suitable for all types of crops.
Upi Mayor Ramon A. Piang, Sr. who is ably represented by Vice Mayor Alexis Datun extended his heartfelt gratitude to the department (DA) for the trust and support accorded to them and to their constituents.
Likewise, VM Datun asserted about continuing the program of planting different trees in response to the growing threat of climate change (global warming) as he added that it would help us preserve and take care of the environment and the nature in general.
The activity was also highlighted by the mass distribution of 2,500 of cacao, rubber and coffee seedlings facilitated by Provincial HVCDP Focal Person Dr. Baingan Iba and municipal agricultural officer Ismael Kamad.
Maguindanao PAO Dr. Daud K. Lagasi gave his closing message relative to the program. He congratulated the coop members for their efforts in building up themselves towards a more fruitful undertaking as they are backed by a supportive LGU (Upi) and other key stakeholders in the province and the ARMM region in general.
In attendance also to the event were delegates from NSQCS-ARMM, BPI-ARMM, Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAg), South Upi LGU through its Hon. Vice Mayor, Bangsamoro Leadership and Management Institute (BLMI) and other farmer-cooperatives in the area.
